What we
are about:
- The Technology/Network Insight team provides the training,
tools and resources to the University Budget Office to keep us on the leading
edge of technology. The team has been tasked to continue the search for
improved tools and techniques, to keep on top of technological developments and
to advise when new deployments are appropriate. We provide assistance to the
other insight teams and work with them to find solutions to problems and make
these solutions available throughout the office. While we have a strong
emphasis on PC based and Internet tools, we also provide assistance on
mainframe programming, security issues, and integration of university wide
technology initiatives.
The University Budget Office Network Staff provides
computer and network services for the University Budget Office Network which is
comprised of the University Budget Office, the President's Office (including
the Provost and Board of Trustee's Office's), the Senior Vice President for
Finance & Business/Treasurer Office, the Corporate Controller's Office, the
Center for Quality and Planning Office, and the Office of Investment
Management. The Network Staff also provides expertise on emerging technologies
in addition to hardware and operating system maintenance and support for the
Web and SQL servers.
At various times everyone in the office contributes to the
mission of the technology team by providing and sharing expertise on a wide
variety of subjects thereby promoting a healthy spirit of teamwork and
cooperation. More about our

What we have
done:
- SQL Server: The installation, maintenance, and
performance of our SQL database. This is becoming a central repository of data
for the Budget Office as we proceed through our Insight task of improving all
of our systems. Training and support are provided along with the initial
investigations and assistance in the best use of SQL for all the teams. The
team also provides templates and standard practices.
WEB Server: The installation, maintenance, and
performance of our WEB (IIS5) Server. In conjunction with the Web team, we
provide training, support, templates, and problem solving for all web based
solutions. We also maintain the development environment and continue to look
for improved methods and tools as the Internet rapidly evolves and changes. We
also insure the security and integration of systems within the changing
University communications environment.
Tools and Training: We filter through the massive
amounts of software choices and techniques to suggest and design what best
suits our needs. This is an office wide effort requiring input from all teams
who have a lot of universal needs but also unique issues for each team. The
tech/network team works within the office to not only provide the tools and
training, but also assist in coordinating this effort with other teams. We
provide the initial and ongoing research and bring our findings and solutions
to the office. Some of the tools and systems used within our office
include:

What we plan to do:
- Microsoft .Net: Currently we are investigating and
working with Microsoft newest web initiative. This is a natural evolution and
path for our office to use. While there is a significant learning curve, the
end result should be better efficiency, faster turnover, and improved structure
in all of our web projects. In addition, we can use these tools and framework
in other non-web systems.
Documentation System: The first project which will
be completed this year using the Microsoft .Net tools will be a new
documentation system which will strive to bring together all our diverse
systems under one documentation umbrella.
Continue to Stay on the Leading Edge of Technology:
We will continue researching, training, and searching for the newest
techniques, tools, and ideas to keep the University Budget Office current
within the University community and the world at large.
